Japanese Reading Comprehension for Beginners
You don't need to know thousands of kanji to start reading Japanese. With just hiragana and a handful of katakana, you can already read real Japanese text. Here's how to build your reading comprehension from zero.
Step 1: Master Hiragana (Week 1-2)
Hiragana is the foundation of Japanese reading. There are 46 basic characters. Practice writing each one, then practice reading them in words. Within 1-2 weeks, you should be able to read any hiragana word without hesitation.
Step 2: Learn Basic Katakana (Week 2-3)
Katakana is used for foreign loanwords (コーヒー, テレビ, パソコン). There are 46 characters, same as hiragana. Many beginners skip katakana — don't. You'll encounter it everywhere.
Step 3: Read Simple Sentences
わたしは がくせいです。
I am a student.
きょうは いいてんきです。
Today is good weather.
コーヒーを のみます。
I drink coffee.
Step 4: Add Basic Kanji
Start with the most common kanji: 日 (day/sun), 月 (moon/month), 水 (water), 火 (fire), 木 (tree). These appear in basic vocabulary and give you a foundation for more complex characters. Our N5 articles use only the most basic kanji with full furigana support.
Step 5: Read Every Day
Even 5 minutes of daily reading builds momentum. The key is consistency, not volume. Read one short article, look up a few words, and move on. Over weeks and months, your comprehension will grow naturally.
