What Changed in 2025?

What Changed

Starting from 2025, JLPT score reports now include a CEFR level annotation alongside the traditional JLPT level. This means your JLPT certificate will show both your JLPT pass level (e.g., N2) and the corresponding CEFR level (e.g., B2).

Why Did JLPT Make This Change?

The Japan Foundation introduced CEFR mapping to improve international recognition of JLPT certificates. CEFR is the global standard for language proficiency, used across Europe and increasingly worldwide. By mapping to CEFR, JLPT holders can more easily demonstrate their Japanese level to international employers and universities.

What Does This Mean for Test Takers?

If you already hold a JLPT certificate, your level remains valid. New certificates issued from July 2025 onwards will include the CEFR annotation. This does not change the difficulty or content of the JLPT — it simply adds an internationally recognized reference point.
