JLPT Scoring System Explained — How Your Score Is Calculated

Understanding the JLPT scaled scoring system, passing scores, and how to read your score report.

Scaled Scoring (尺度得点)

Since 2010, the JLPT has used a scaled scoring system instead of raw percentage scores. This means your score is not simply the number of correct answers — it is a statistically adjusted score that accounts for the difficulty of each specific test.

Why Scaled Scoring?

Different JLPT test sessions have slightly different difficulty levels. Without scaling, a harder test would unfairly produce lower scores. Scaled scoring ensures that a score of 50 on one test represents the same ability as 50 on any other test, regardless of when you took it.

How It Works

Your raw answers are analyzed using Item Response Theory (IRT), a statistical method that considers both the number of correct answers and the difficulty of each question. This produces a scaled score that is comparable across all test sessions.

Understanding the Sections

N5 and N4: 2 Sections

N5 and N4 have 2 scoring sections:

  • Language Knowledge + Reading (0-120 points): Vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension combined
  • Listening (0-60 points): Listening comprehension

Note: N5/N4 sections are scored out of 120 and 60 respectively (total 180), but the minimum passing requirement is 19 per section.

N3, N2, and N1: 3 Sections

N3, N2, and N1 have 3 scoring sections:

  • Language Knowledge (Vocabulary) (0-60 points)
  • Reading (0-60 points)
  • Listening (0-60 points)

Pass/Fail Rules

To pass the JLPT, you must meet BOTH conditions:

  1. 1.Your total score must be at or above the passing score for your level
  2. 2.Your score in each section must be at or above 19 points

Example: For N3, if you score 100 total but only 15 in Listening, you will FAIL despite exceeding the 95-point total requirement.
