Japanese Reading Speed Test: How Fast Can You Read?
How fast can you read Japanese? Reading speed is one of the most overlooked skills in Japanese learning. Most learners focus on vocabulary and grammar but never measure or train their reading speed. Let's fix that.
What Is a Good Japanese Reading Speed?
N5 Level: 50-100 characters per minute (beginner)
N4 Level: 100-200 characters per minute
N3 Level: 200-400 characters per minute
N2 Level: 400-600 characters per minute
N1 Level: 600-1000 characters per minute
Native Speaker: 1000-2000 characters per minute
How to Measure Your Speed
Choose an article at your level. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Read as much as you can. Count the characters you read (most Japanese text editors show character count). Divide by 5 to get your characters per minute.
How to Improve Your Speed
Practice daily with material at your level. Don't try to force speed — it comes naturally with exposure. The more you read, the faster you'll get. Focus on comprehension first, speed second. Speed without understanding is meaningless.
Track Your Progress
Measure your reading speed once a week. Keep a log. You should see improvement within 2-4 weeks of consistent practice. If you don't, the material might be too hard — drop down a level.
