JLPT N2 Reading Tips: How to Pass the Reading Section
The JLPT N2 reading section is notoriously difficult. Passages are longer, vocabulary is more abstract, and the questions test your ability to understand nuance and implication. Here's how to tackle it.
N2 Reading Section Overview
The N2 reading section has 5 question types with about 17 questions total. You get 60 minutes. Passages range from 300-700 characters. Topics include opinion essays, news articles, business texts, and literary excerpts.
Strategy 1: Read the Questions First
Before reading the passage, read all the questions and answer choices. This tells you what to look for. When you read the passage, you'll naturally notice the relevant sections.
Strategy 2: Identify the Author's Main Point
N2 passages often have a clear thesis. Look for sentences with 「我认为」「重要的是」「问题在于」. The author's opinion is usually in the first or last paragraph. Everything else is supporting evidence.
Strategy 3: Watch for Contrast Words
しかし / だが / けど — "but" — the real point comes after
一方で — "on the other hand" — introduces a contrasting view
それに対して — "in contrast" — the author disagrees
確かに...しかし — "certainly...but" — concession followed by disagreement
Practice Materials
Read Japanese news articles (NHK News Web Easy is great for N3-N2 transition). Read opinion pieces on topics you're interested in. The key is reading real Japanese, not textbook passages.
