JLPT N3 Reading Practice: Complete Guide

May 2026N3

The JLPT N3 reading section is where many learners hit a wall. The jump from N4 to N3 is significant — you go from simple sentences to paragraphs with complex grammar and abstract topics. Here's how to prepare.

N3 Reading Section Format

The N3 reading section has 7 question types with about 13 questions total. You get 40 minutes for the reading section. The passages are 150-300 characters long, covering topics like daily life, work, news, and culture.

Key Grammar Points for N3 Reading

Conditional forms — ば、たら、なら、と and their differences

Passive voice — られる form and its uses

Causative form — させる/せられる

Conjunctive particles — のに、ので、ながら、つつ

Formal expressions — に関して、に対して、について

Practice Strategy

Read one N3-level article per day. Don't just read — actively engage with the text. Look up unfamiliar grammar points, note new vocabulary, and answer comprehension questions. Our N3 articles include all of this built-in.

Time Management Tips

You have about 3 minutes per question. Read the questions first, then scan the passage for answers. Don't try to understand every word — focus on the main idea and the specific details the questions ask about.
